In Malta, understanding which radios are legal to use can be a bit tricky. There's no one-size-fits-all answer, as different types of radios have their own specific regulations. Let's break down the key categories to help you stay on the right side of the law:

1. PMR446 Radios: License-Free and Always Legal

PMR446 radios, commonly known as license-free radios, operate on designated frequencies that don't require any additional licensing in Malta. These are a popular choice for personal use, small businesses, and recreational activities. Feel free to use them without worry!

2. Professional Analog or DMR Radios: Licensed and Frequency-Specific

Professional analog or DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) radios are legal in Malta, but with a crucial caveat: they must only be used on the frequencies assigned to you in your license. Programming these radios with unauthorized frequencies is illegal and can result in hefty fines. Ensure you have a valid license and adhere strictly to the assigned frequencies.

3. All-Band Radios: Illegal for Professional Use

All-band radios, often found from budget manufacturers, allow users to input any frequency and transmit. These are strictly prohibited for professional use in Malta. Even if set to your licensed frequencies, using these radios in a professional setting is illegal. Amateur radio enthusiasts may occasionally use them, but extreme caution is advised to stay within legal boundaries.

Importing Radios from Outside the EU

If you're considering importing radios from outside the European Union, it's crucial to obtain a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) before you purchase. This document confirms the radio adheres to essential requirements. We also recommend submitting the DoC to the MCA (Malta Communications Authority) for approval and confirmation that it can be included in your license.
